New chapter in Food Cupboard history begins

After more than 50 years serving residents in the Hamilton and Madison School districts from
borrowed or rented facilities, Hamilton Food Cupboard broke ground August 7 on a permanent
home designed specifically for its purpose.

Located on Wing’s Way at Hamilton Airpark, behind Vantine Imaging, the 1,600-square-foot
building was planned by architect Bruce Ward with an adjacent 18 x 20’ greenhouse to meet the
needs of the 175-200 local families served by the Food Cupboard each month. Easily
accessible and with plenty of parking, the facility is centrally located to address the Food
Cupboard’s mission: “To be an advocate for the hungry in the Hamilton and Madison School
Districts.”

With general contractor Jordan Ashcroft overseeing the local tradespersons working on the
building, completion is expected by the end of the calendar year.

Speaking to the 50 or so volunteers and community residents – including the Colgate men’s
basketball team – who gathered for the groundbreaking, Food Cupboard President Russ Lura
praised the many volunteers who have staffed the Food Cupboard over the years and made it a
vital part of the community. He said that Director Suzanne Collins’s tireless efforts “really make
all this work.”

Lura thanked architect Ward, “who donated his time and expertise to provide us with a beautiful
and functional design that will serve our community for years to come.” He also acknowledged a
generous grant from the Episcopal Church and leadership gifts to the project from two local
families.

The Food Cupboard Board will soon be appealing to local supporters in hopes of having the
project fully donor-funded before the doors open to the public.

Tax-deductible contributions can be made online at the Food Cupboard’s website or mailed to the Hamilton Food Cupboard, P.O. Box 411, Hamilton, NY 13346.

Visit the website or contact Director Suzanne Collins (315-824-2832) for more information.

Colgate hockey team helps raise funds

Early in their successful season, hockey players from Colgate University traded their uniforms for restaurant attire as they served guests at the Hamilton Inn to raise money for the Food Cupboard.

The event, “Raiders as Waiters," aided our fundraising drive for our new building. Any gratuities the players received went to the Hamilton Food Cupboard.

The event raised more than $6,000 for the Food Cupboard.

Summer lunches available

Summer lunches will be available to families who are eligible for free and reduced lunches in the Hamilton and Madison school districts. Food Boxes will be available at the Hamilton Food
Cupboard for the months of July and August. If you have school-age children and are interested in receiving a weekly food box stop by the Food Cupboard Tuesdays or Thursdays from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m.

We are located at 400 Wings Way Extension.

These items will help folks stay warm and enjoy the holidays.

We've moved ... again!

The Hamilton Food Cupboard has a new home at 400 Wings Way Extension.

We first relocated from our longtime location on Mill Street to 6697 Airport Road near Paul Oil and across the street from the Price Chopper. And, now, we have a new location.

A number of very helpful volunteers helped pack up food and our offices, transported them to our new location and helped get everything in place.

Despite the move, our hours remain the same: Tuesday and Thursday from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m.

What hasn't changed is where to send any donations. They can be sent to PO box 411, Hamilton, NY 13346.

We hope you'll stop by and see our new location.

School supplies needed as classes resume

It's back to school time, and the children of some of the folks who rely on us will be needing supplies for when classes resume. To be sure their children have what they need, please consider donating:
  • backpacks
  • three-ring binders
  • crayons
  • two pocket folders

About the Hamilton Food Cupboard

Mission Statement: The Hamilton Food Cupboard is an advocate for the hungry in the Hamilton and Madison school districts. The food cupboard feeds those in need while providing information on social agencies relevant to a patron's specific needs.

What we do: Each month between 150-200 families from the Hamilton and Madison school districts visit the food cupboard.

Our summer lunch program runs for eight 8 weeks during the summer. Families of school age children receive a supplemental box of food per week to help get by when school is not in session.

We supply more than food. The Food Cupboard also has basic school supplies and backpacks for children who need them.

With our partner Price Chopper, we're able to supply fresh fruits and vegetables.

There are several issues that bring families to us, either on a regular basis or a one time visit. Loss of jobs, low paying jobs and health issues combined with the ever rising price of food and living expenses are some of the reasons families come to the Food Cupboard.

Our volunteer staff and director also make referrals to other assisting agencies, if possible.

How we do what we do: We rely heavily on community support, financially and in donated goods. We also receive monetary and food donations from churches in the area, local colleges and civic organizations and service clubs.

Hours of Operation: Tuesday and Thursday 1-6 p.m. OR by appointment

We're Located: 400 Wings Way Extension
